Durban - A Ballito couple is counting the cost of a blitz handbag theft at a shopping centre on Friday.

The theft, caught on CCTV cameras, shows a pair of well-versed women first distracting the couple and then making off with the woman’s handbag, which contained R2 000 in cash and other items.

Tony Psaila told News24 he and his wife had been grocery shopping at the Lifestyle Centre on Friday.

“We had been shopping for dinner on Friday night and we were looking at a deli window when one woman distracted us,” he said.

“She had started mumbling something to us in a language I didn’t understand and as we moved closer to try and hear what she was saying her accomplice came behind us and slipped my wife’s bag off the trolley.”

Psaila said they realised moments later and raised the alarm, and established that the entire robbery had been caught on film.

“They caught the one lady who distracted us because she was still in the shop and on the footage you can see the one with the bag walk out of the shop and get into a car that was waiting for her and drive off,” he said.

“It looks like they knew what they were doing,” Psaila added.

Police had not responded to questions at the time of publishing.
