Bloemfontein – A 71-year-old businessman was shot dead, while his girlfriend and employees were held hostage at his house in Phahameng in Bloemfontein, on Tuesday afternoon, Free State police said.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Thandi Mbambo, three suspects stormed into the man’s tavern and demanded keys to the safe.

One of the suspects went to the bathroom where the man was bathing and shot him. He died on scene.

Mbambo said the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money, three cellphones, a number of car keys and the man’s bakkie, which was later found abandoned in Phelindaba.

A case of murder, armed robbery, theft and theft of a motor vehicle have been opened.

No arrests had yet been made.
