Bloemfontein - A police officer shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself during an argument at their home in Bloemside, Free State police said on Wednesday.

The shooting happened on Tuesday night at 19:20, said police spokesperson Sergeant Ikobeng Hlubi.

The 45-year-old warrant officer, stationed at Bram Fisher Airport, first threatened his 44-year-old wife, said Hlubi.

"She ran out of the house and he followed her and shot her... she fell at the street corner," said Hlubi.

The officer then turned the gun on himself. The woman had two gunshot wounds to her head.

A murder case and an inquest docket have been registered.
