Bloemfontein - A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 73-year-old Bloemfontein resident, Free State police said on Friday.

The 23-year-old was arrested in Phase 5 in Mangaung on Friday morning at 05:00 following a tip-off, police spokesperson Captain Chaka Marope said.

“The man was found in possession of a cellphone that belongs to the deceased,” said Marope.  

He will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Hendrik Knoetzer was found with his legs and hands bound and an open wound at the back of his head in his home in Pellissier on Monday morning.  

A neighbour, who last saw him four days previously found his kitchen door open around 08:00. It was believed that Knoetzer was killed during a robbery.
