Violent protests broke out at Hoërskool Overvaal this week after 55 pupils, to be taught in English, were denied access to the Afrikaans-medium school after a Gauteng Department of Education directive to take in the pupils was struck down by the Gauteng High Court. WATCH

Racial divisions and tensions marred the beginning of the school year with weeklong violent protests at Hoërskool Overvaal in Vereeniging, Gauteng, this week.

Protesters wanted the school to admit 55 non-Afrikaans speaking pupils despite a high court ruling against government’s plan to
enrol them there.

The protesters leading the demonstrations were affiliated to the ANC, the Economic Freedom Fighters and the Congress of South African Students.

On Thursday, the Human Rights Commission visited the school to try to restore calm.

It called for restraint and assured parents that their children were safe, despite the ongoing violence.
