Cape Town – The bodies of two Cape Town students who went missing at Strand Beach on Saturday have been found, Western Cape police confirmed on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said one of the bodies washed up at Macassar Beach on Tuesday at 13:50.

The young man was identified by his family when they arrived at the scene.

The second student's body was recovered on the same beach on Wednesday morning.

Inquest dockets have been registered, Van Wyk said.

The two young men, aged 19 and 20, disappeared in the surf at Strand on Saturday afternoon while visiting the beach with the Students' Christian Organisation (SCO).

The two are understood to be students at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

Rough sea conditions

Two young women – who had also been swept out to sea on the same day in the area known as Pipe, bordering Strand Beach and AECI Somerset West – were rescued.

According to the NSRI, the group had entered the water at the no swimming zone, a surfing area known for its big waves and strong rip currents.

Sea conditions were rough at the time with breaking swells of 2.5m to 3m, strong south-easterly winds, and poor water visibility.

An extensive air, sea and shoreline search found no sign of the two students.

UWC, in a statement after the men's disappearance, said one was a second-year law student and the other was a first-year mechanical engineering student at CPUT.

Ashley Daswa, regional spokesperson for the SCO's Western Cape region, said it was "particularly upsetting that the public has been led to think that the students were irresponsible in their conduct".
