Durban - Umkomaas police are investigating after the body of a child was found in a river near Durban on Monday.

According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lt-Col Thulani Zwane, police divers were dispatched to Ngane River near Umkomaas after a train driver reported seeing something floating in the river.

Upon arrival at the scene, the divers searched the river and found the body of a boy believed to be about 10 years old.

The child has not been identified yet.

Zwane says Umkomaas police opened an inquest docket and are also looking through missing persons reports to try to find the child’s family.

In another case, the same team of divers earlier that day recovered the severely decomposed remains of a man in the Nonoti River in KwaDukuza.

Police were called to the scene by people who were fishing in the area. The body hasn’t been identified yet and police are investigating.
