Durban – The death of a 28-year-old man who was found in a South Beach hotel room in Durban has police mystified.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Major Thulani Zwane, said Jan Craemer’s body was discovered on Thursday, December 3.

Zwane said initially police thought that a 43-year-old man, who had booked into the hotel, had been shot and killed. Later police found that Craemer was an acquaintance of the guest who had booked into the resort.

"The victim, who was not announced by the guest to the resort’s reception on arrival, has been identified as Jan Craemer, 28, who was reported as missing at Brighton Beach police station," said Zwane.

Zwane said the guest had allegedly booked into the hotel for two nights. The acquaintance, however, had not.

"On November 30 at about 15:00, [the guest] booked in and he went to his room alone. Later on the same day, he left the resort and returned... later with Craemer, to his room.

"Around 19:30 the guest was seen leaving the resort alone and was never seen going back to his room and Craemer was also not seen leaving the building."

Zwane said there was a 'Do Not Disturb' notice on the door handle.

"On December 3 a resort employee became suspicious that the room was still locked and the Do Not Disturb sign was still on the door. He opened the room only to find that there was a dead body inside."

Zwane said: "Point police with the assistance from the resort are working hard to trace the suspect."
