The body of a police constable, with a gunshot wound to the head, was found in the men's toilets at the Parkweg police station in Bloemfontein, police said on Tuesday.

A 9mm firearm was found next to him, police spokesperson Colonel Thandi Mbambo said.

The body of Constable Xolile Dada was discovered at about 18:15 on Monday, when an officer went to the bathroom, Mbambo said.

"The officer [who] discovered the body indicated that, as he was approaching the door to the toilet, he heard a loud bang and wondered what was happening.

"As he tried to enter the toilets, he saw the body on the floor and went to alert other colleagues," Mbambo added.

The 27-year-old officer, who worked at the Parkweg Community Service Centre, had been on sick leave for about a month and was supposed to report for duty on April 1, Mbambo said.

However, he only reported the following day.

Police are investigating an inquest case.

"Our heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues and friends. We urge members to continuously use our Employee Health and Wellness services to assist them in dealing with their personal and work-related pressures," Mbambo added.
