Polokwane – Two men are expected to appear at the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Monday for impersonating SARS officials, local police said.

The two men have been charged with fraud for extorting thousands of rands from unsuspecting victims. They were arrested on Friday.

Limpopo police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, said the two suspects, aged 24 and 28, pretended to be officials working at the South African Revenue Service.

The suspects, a Zimbabwean and South African, solicited CVs from job seekers and told them that they had been successful.

"They would then demand money from the victims, telling them it was for uniform[s] and employee ID card[s]. At face value, the cards which have photos and IDs of potential employees, appear authentic as they bear [the] SARS emblem or logo."

Mojapelo said the uniforms, which were T-shirts, had similar emblems.

People were defrauded of amounts of money between R2 500 and R3 000.

The fraudulent cards and uniforms were confiscated from the men’s bogus office in the CBD.

Police confirmed that the two were not employed by SARS, however the South African suspect was once an intern at SARS in 2012.
