Johannesburg – A seemingly empty truck stopped for routine inspection in North West yielded an unexpected find when customs officials discovered drugs worth almost R80m, South African Revenue Service (SARS) customs officials said in a statement.

When SARS customs officials searched the truck at the Kopfontein Gate border post on Saturday, they initially found it to be empty  until their trained sniffer dog smelled a rat.

In this case it was 141 packages of Mandrax – 1 428 140 tablets worth R78 547 700  stashed away in false compartments in the truck.

Two foreigners were arrested, and together with the truck and tablets, were handed over to the South African Police.
