Borehole vandalism blow for Limpopo municipality

2016-02-27 15:33

The Mookgopong Local Municipality in Limpopo have laid criminal charges with the local police after four boreholes were vandalised overnight.

Municipal spokesperson Naththaly Tlhoaela told News24 that cable theft had been a problem in the area for years.

On Friday night, however, the boreholes were vandalised, which would prove even more disruptive as it would affect the municipality's ability to provide water.

"There are seven boreholes in the area and four were vandalised. One was merely vandalised, while three had their pumps cut," he said.

Tlhoaela said the damage could cost more than R200 000 to repair.

It was clear that the pumps were vandalised by someone who knew what they were doing, he said.

"When the pumps were cut, they fell deep into the borehole, which means we can't access them to fix."

He said the ongoing cable theft and now vandalism was making it harder for the municipality to provide water.

"We cannot pump enough water for the municipality, which means households will be affected."

He said a case of vandalism was being investigated.
