KwaZulu-Natal – A teenager died trying to save another teen from drowning in Umkomaas on Friday, paramedics said.

The 15-year-old jumped into the water at Widenham, on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast to save a teenage girl who had gotten into difficulty.

He was caught in a rip current.

Bystanders pulled both teenagers out the water, but the 15-year-old was unresponsive.

Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said paramedics and doctors worked to resuscitate him for more than two hours.

He died in hospital, while the girl was treated on the beach before being taken to hospital.
