Durban - A six-year-old boy is in a critical condition in a Pietermaritzburg hospital after a baboon attacked him on a farm near Richmond on Friday.

The attack happened on the farm Progress, after workers had repeatedly complained to the farmer about baboons terrorising them and chasing their children, the KwaZulu-Natal premier’s spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said in a statement.

“Following this incident, we have uncovered untold sufferings of families living on farms in Richmond. Families have complained bitterly that for years they have been fending off sustained attacks from a troop of baboons owned by the owner of the farm.”

The baboons had been destroying the family’s crops and the farmer had apparently been ignoring their pleas for help, Sibiya said.

The premier had instructed his office to contact the South African Human Rights Commission to investigate the alleged violation of human rights on that farm and others in the area.
