Johannesburg - The SPCA in Brakpan, east of Johannesburg, is appealing to the public and companies to help it repair damages and replace items stolen at its offices on Friday morning.

"The Brakpan SPCA is a registered non-profit organisation. Their most recent audited financial statements reflect a loss of R20 218.00," the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) said in a statement.

It pleaded with members of the public to offer support and assistance.

The break-in took place during the early hours of Friday morning. The robbers entered the premises through the ceiling of the kitchen and proceeded to ransack the administration building.

Among the items stolen were: R3 500 in cash, a collection tin, a pair of safety boots, computer towers and hard drives, crockery, cutlery, a new overhead projector, and a camera.

The theft would affect how SPCA officials carried out their inspections, it said.

"Inspectorate operations are affected... The loss of the camera impacts on the SPCA’s ability to provide visual evidence in cruelty cases," it said.

The robbers had also damaged three trays of feline vaccines.

The NSPCA said that the hospital was now working at a disadvantage.

Although some items in the building had been insured, they would still need to repair the structural damage and consider employing guards to ensure the safety of the animals and employees.

"The priority is to enable this SPCA to remain operational and to assist all animals,"  it said.
