Johannesburg - Four security guards put their lives on the line when they bravely confronted a knife-wielding car thief suspect who allegedly charged at them in Bergbron, Johannesburg, leaving two of them with stab wounds to the chest, police said on Wednesday.

Lieutenant Colonel Kay Makhubela said the incident happened at a shopping centre on Tuesday afternoon.

The guards had noticed the man allegedly trying to steal a BMW X3 in the centre's parking lot.

The group confronted him, but the suspect was not willing to go down without a fight.

He charged at the security guards, stabbing two of them.

"The security guards were stabbed in the upper body, but both are in a stable condition," Makhubela said.

Despite attempts to flee, the suspected car thief was arrested and he is now expected to face two charges of attempted murder.
