Durban - Several people have been killed in a shoot-out in Greytown, KwaZulu-Natal on Friday.

Two police sources with knowledge of the incident, who could not be named as they are not authorised to speak to the media, said that officers from the Special Task Force had been involved in the shoot-out with a gang of gunmen.

Initial reports from the scene were that five gunmen had been killed and three others were critically wounded.

It is understood that the Special Task Force operation may have been in response to a spate of police killings in the province.

This is a developing story. More to follow.
