Cape Town – A man accused of the brutal murder of a young woman in Bredasdorp has been referred to a mental health hospital for observation, an NPA official said on Tuesday.

Delvigo Ward, 20, was referred to Valkenberg Hospital after he abandoned his bail application in the Bredasdorp Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

He is accused of killing 22-year-old Sulnita Manho in April.

The man's mental state would be observed to establish if he was fit to stand trial, National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said.

At Ward’s last appearance, it emerged that his family had admitted him to Stikland mental health hospital in Bellville on October 13.

Ntabazalila said a doctor who examined Ward then had found him fit to stand trial.

However, the court heard on Tuesday that the State was not in a position to get the report from Stikland.

Manho’s body was found at the lime works in the rural Overberg town early on a weekend morning.

She had apparently been at a local pub with friends when a man offered to walk her back to her farm outside Bredasdorp, said Napier Community Police Forum member and councillor Evelyn Sauls.

"There was a rope on her neck. She was raped and a bottle was put in her private parts. The person took a brick and hit her on the head," Sauls said.

The case was postponed to June 9.
