Pietermaritzburg - Within hours of finding the remains of an Imbali woman whose body was chopped into pieces and then burnt, police arrested a suspect for her murder at the weekend.

Police would not release the name of the victim yesterday but she is believed to be a 20-year-old woman from Imbali.

Umgungundlovu South police spokesperson Mthokosizi Ngobese said a 35-year-old man was arrested by members of the dog unit on Friday night in connection with the murder.

He said the Pietermaritzburg Crime Intelligence team on Friday was given information that led to the arrest of the man, believed to be the husband of the victim.

Ngobese said the suspect is expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

Ngobese said the burnt remains of the woman were discovered in a shallow grave behind the rented house in Imbali where she stayed.

“The suspect was arrested on the same night at about 9 pm. He was found in the bushes,” said Ngobese.
