Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma on Monday expressed shock at the bus accident which killed 11 ANC supporters on their way back from the party's election manifesto launch in Port Elizabeth.

"This is a loss, not for the ANC only, but the country as a whole," he said in a statement.

He also sent condolences to the families of the three people killed in a car crash in Pietermaritzburg. According to The Witness newspaper, a local doctor and two other people were killed when their car plunged into the Duzi River early on Sunday morning.

"We are with all the families that have lost their loved ones tragically and in this most painful manner. We urge the nation to keep the families in their thoughts and prayers."

Zuma wished all those injured in the bus accident a speedy recovery.

Eleven people were killed, and more than 50 injured, in the accident between Winburg and Ventersburg in the Free State on Sunday. The bus was taking ANC supporters home to Ekurhuleni, Gauteng.

Opposition parties also sent their condolences to the ANC and the families of those killed.
