Ekurhuleni - An Intercape bus driver is in a critical condition after the bus he was driving crashed into the back of an articulated dump truck along the N3 north near Vosloorus, the Ekurhuleni disaster and emergency management services said on Sunday.

The collision took place around 05:50 on Sunday, spokesperson William Ntladi said.

Although it was not immediately clear what had caused the collision. Ntladi said the bus, which was travelling from Mthatha to Johannesburg, had crashed into the back of the truck, which was in the emergency lane.

"The truck driver was experiencing problems with his vehicle and moved to the emergency lane. However, before he could stop the vehicle, he heard a big bang at the back. The bus had crashed into him," Ntladi said.

The majority of the estimated 35 passengers on the bus were asleep at the time of the accident and could not assist officials with the details of what had happened.

Some sustained minor injuries, including the assistant driver.

Emergency personnel had to use Jaws of Life to remove the driver from the bus, after the collision left him trapped, Ntladi said.

A case of reckless and negligent driving has since been opened by the Ekurhuleni Metro police department and would be investigated further, spokesperson Lieutenant Kobeli Mokheseng said.
