Pietermaritzburg – A bus driver was shot dead while transporting about 50 people along Old Wartburg Road in Pietermaritzburg on Monday evening, paramedics said.

The vehicle went down an embankment and crashed into the front of a house after the driver, believed to be 50, was shot, said ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing.

"Paramedics found the bus driver still in the bus. Sadly there was nothing that could be done for the man. He was declared dead," she said.

She said paramedics treated and transported one patient from the bus to hospital for minor injuries. All other passengers refused hospital treatment.

Further details on the shooting were not immediately available.

KwaZulu-Natal police said they would comment at a later stage.
