Johannesburg - One person was killed while a 6-year-old was left in a critical condition following a crash on the Golden Highway in Johannesburg on Saturday morning, said paramedics.

ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene and found that a BMW had been T-boned by a bus, said spokesperson Werner Vermaak.

"On further inspection paramedics found an adult in the BMW that sustained fatal injuries. Three other adults, one of them in a critical condition, and a 6-year-old child, also in a critical condition, was found in the vehicle," said Vermaak.

The patients were all extricated from the vehicle.

"The child sustained critical injuries and was later airlifted to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for further medical treatment. One of the adults that sustained critical injuries was rushed off to the same hospital by ambulance," said Vermaak.

Another adult from the car as well as the bus driver were treated for moderate injuries before being transported to hospital.

The bus driver was the only occupant in the bus.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.
