At least two Golden Arrow buses and two private vehicles were set alight during protest action on the N2 highway at Khayelitsha on Thursday night, City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Theo Layne said.

He said the incident happened at around 20:00 and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters had to wait for a police escort before responding.

City of Cape Town law enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason said around 12 people set tyres alight under the Mew Way bridge.

The reason for the protest was not immediately clear.

Western Cape traffic chief Kenny Africa said tyres were set alight on the N2 at Mew Way and on the bridge.

According to his knowledge, three buses and two private vehicles were set alight.

"The N2 towards Cape Town [is] still closed at Spine Road," he said.
