Johannesburg - Cabinet should never lose the spirit of cordiality, former President Kgalema Motlanthe said.

"Government is guided by cordiality and working and working as one cabinet. It's our hope that it should never change. That it should continue like that," he told journalists at a networking event for parliament's high level panel on the assessment of key legislation on Friday night.

Though Motlanthe steered clear of questions around ongoing spats between different government departments, including the war that's erupted between the revenue service and Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, he said lessons could be learnt from how different spheres of government had to learn to work together.

"There are many lessons we could take from FIFA [2010 Soccer World Cup] that it's possible to do things in real time, take crime for instance. Someone could be arrested, charged and appear in court the next day and by afternoon convicted," said Motlanthe.

He said the solution for some of government's hiccups was to work together and efficiently.

The panel which is expected to complete its work in 2017 has already conducted some public hearings where it says issues of accountability and responsibility have come up as a major issue when it comes to the public's perception to the implementation of legislation.
