Cape Town – Calm has been restored to Avian Park in Worcester after residents turned on police, pelting them with stones, Western Cape police said on Thursday.

Police were dispatched to the area on Wednesday evening to escort firemen who were responding to a house fire, apparently caused by a short-circuit, Sergeant Julian Plaatjies said.

"While the fire brigade extinguished the fire, about five shots went off. Police then reacted to it."

About 600 residents gathered at the scene and started throwing stones at police. Public Order Police in armoured vehicles were called when things got out of hand, Plaatjies said.

A resident was shot in the stomach and taken to hospital. It was not known who shot him.

A 21-year-old man who lived in Avian Park was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head on Tuesday morning. On Sunday, a man was shot dead in a block of flats. He died outside a resident's door on the ground floor.

Plaatjies said the angry residents had ganged up after Tuesday's shooting and burnt down two shacks they associated with gangsters.
