Johannesburg - Calm has returned to Leratong, Krugersdorp after about 500 residents barricaded roads, police said on Thursday.

On Wednesday, they barricaded Old Main Reef Road from Leratong Hospital to Durban Deep circle and Impala Road, Captain Appel Ernst said.

Residents were apparently unhappy with the list of candidates for the area who would contest the August 3 local government election.

On Monday, protesters burned tyres and stoned vehicles.

Police were monitoring the area.
