Cape Town  The joint standing committee on intelligence will shortlist candidates for the inspector general of intelligence on Friday in Parliament.

The sub-committee of the joint standing committee on intelligence met in February to discuss and shortlist the candidates for the position, Parliamentary Monitoring Group (PMG) reported.

PMG reported that 55 candidates were under consideration.

Parliament’s joint standing committee on intelligence (JSCI) report recommended former ANC MP Cecil Burgess’ appointment, News24 reported.

Opposition objections

Burgess was the former head of the intelligence committee and he championed the so-called 'secrecy bill'.

Opposition parties fiercely objected to his candidacy.

"We have no doubt regarding the capability of the recommended candidate, Advocate Cecil Burgess – who certainly met all the prescribed requirements for the post – to discharge the duties of the office independently and professionally as directed by the Constitution and the Act," the ANC said in a statement.

However, the party said, in the spirit of consensus-building and inclusivity, they thought it appropriate to refer the matter back to the committee to ensure that there was broader and sufficient consultation around the candidate.

PMG reported that the criteria for the job included a candidate’s career skills, knowledge and education. South African citizenship, knowledge of the intelligence and counter-intelligence sector and impartiality were also important.
