Cape Town – When a Cape Town police officer's vehicle overturned in Milnerton on Tuesday morning, his first concern was for his K9 companion.

Sergeant Gordon Mphatlhane and his pooch Molly were in the K9 Unit vehicle when it overturned and came to a stop on the N7 outbound in Milnerton.

When paramedics arrived on scene, they found the police officer walking around and trying to extricate his canine companion from the vehicle, said ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring.

But the Border Collie was trapped inside.

Meiring said the dog fortunately only had a minor laceration under one eye.

Paramedics and Cape Road Assist used a winch from the towing vehicle to break the middle partition of the vehicle.

Curious bystanders stood on the side as a paramedic lifted the black and white dog out of the vehicle.

"After a short time, Molly was freed from the vehicle and handed to her anxious handler, and both were assessed and treated."

Meiring said both had minor injuries. They were transported to hospital, where Molly was handed over to the K9 Unit.

Unit commander of the Cape Town dog unit, Lieutenant Colonel Ivan Myers, said he was relieved that both were okay.

He said the dog had specialised skills in picking up biological fluids. "Molly goes to rape scenes and detects blood and semen."

He said Mphatlhane was not able to speak about the accident because it was sub judice. The sergeant has been at the unit for about 11 years.

Meiring said it was not yet clear what had caused the accident.
