Cape Town – Paramedics who were called to certify a death in Hanover Park got caught up in crossfire, Western Cape Health emergency medical services said on Wednesday.

The crew arrived at Galway Court at 08:00 on Tuesday as two rival gangs were exchanging gunshots, said spokesperson Robert Daniels. He said their ambulance was damaged.

No crew members were injured. They received trauma counselling.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed a shooting at 07:15. He said an attempted murder case was being investigated and no arrests had yet been made.

In September around 300 provincial emergency medical services workers, police officers, private paramedics, nurses and residents marched in Philippi in protest against attacks on emergency medical services (EMS).

A memorandum demanded that attacks stop immediately before someone was killed. It urged residents to stand together and help.

Daniels said Hanover Park was identified as a danger zone for EMS staff.

They would not be entering the area without a police escort and this would affect response times considerably. He said the safety of their staff was their first priority.
