Cape Town - A pilot killed in a light aircraft crash near Mossel Bay on Wednesday had been an icon of the aviation industry.

Keith Paterson, 51, died after his private plane crashed after taking off from Port Elizabeth shortly before 9:00 on Wednesday.

Paterson had been a director of a flight school, PTC Aviation, which is based in Port Elizabeth
PTC Aviation CEO Attie Niemann said that Paterson had joined the business after progressing through the ranks in aviation, and becoming one of the top training minds in the country.

"He is a highly professional guy and on a personal level he was a very friendly and reserved type of guy and he had the best work ethic of anyone I have ever met," he said.

Niemann said Paterson's death was a massive loss.

Niemann could not be drawn to comment on the details of the plane crash which remains shrouded in mystery.

"At this point, anything we say or think is speculation because the Civil Aviation Authority is investigating. It was an accident with very few eyewitnesses and people just saw the plane going down in the distance, so we actually have very little idea of what is happening," he said.
