Cape Town – A man has been arrested for allegedly setting an occupied car alight in Gardens, Cape Town, Western Cape police said on Wednesday.

The suspect, 38, faced charges of attempted murder and malicious damage to property, said Constable Noloyiso Rwexana.

A 50-year-old man was set alight inside his car in Wesley Street on Tuesday morning.

Rwexana refused to confirm whether the vehicle was petrol-bombed.

“The circumstances surrounding this incident are being investigated,” she said.

Fire and rescue officials extinguished the fire and removed the man from the vehicle, said ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Provincial emergency services spokesperson Robert Daniels said the man had third degree burns to 90% of his body.

His alleged attacker was arrested the same day and is in hospital under police guard.

Captain Frederick van Wyk explained the suspect also sustained burn wounds.

He would appear in court soon.
