Cape Town – A law enforcement officer was ambushed and killed while waiting inside an official vehicle for a colleague, the City of Cape Town said on Saturday.

Julian Davidson, 30, was shot and killed in Lower Crossroads on Friday night.

"It's understood the perpetrators fired a number of shots at Officer Davidson through the side window of the vehicle," the City of Cape Town's Wayne le Roux said in a statement.

The City sent its condolences to Davidson's family, saying they would assist them through "this very difficult time".

The case is being investigated by the Hawks.

The City appealed for members of the public to come forward with any information that could assist in bringing those responsible to book, and is offering a R50 000 reward.
