Cape Town - A policeman was shot dead and robbed of his service pistol outside his home in Philippi East on Monday morning, Western Cape police said.

The 39-year-old constable, stationed at the Grassy Park detective branch, was shot in front of his home in Hlosi Street as he was about to leave for work at 06:15, Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said.

He was sitting in an unmarked police car at the time. His killers took his 9mm service pistol.

Western Cape police commissioner Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula vowed that the killers would be "sought with all the resources at our disposal".

"An attack on any member of SAPS is an attack on the entire police service," he said.

The Hawks are investigating the murder.
