Shots were fired at the 32-year-old constable, who is based at the Mitchells Plain police station, spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said.

"[He] was sitting in an official vehicle in Galaweni Street, KTC, when two males came up to his vehicle and fired three shots through the window.

"The member was wounded [and] the suspects fled with his [cellphone]. He was admitted to hospital in a serious condition."

No arrests had yet been made.

On Monday, a policeman was shot dead and robbed of his service pistol outside his home in Philippi East.

The 39-year-old constable, stationed at the Grassy Park detective branch, was shot in front of his home in Hlosi Street as he was about to leave for work at 06:15.

He was sitting in an unmarked police car at the time.
