Cape Town council worker dismissed for alleged tender fraud

2016-04-04 17:47

Cape Town - A City of Cape Town employee was on Monday dismissed following fraud allegations related to a tender, council confirmed.

This followed the employee's arrest on fraud charges in January, following an internal investigation.

According to a statement, the employee was a member of council's Bid Specification and Bid Evaluation committees to assess tenders for which their family and a friend had bid.

"Neither the employee nor the bidders declared knowledge of one another when required to do so. By law, employees are required to make such declarations and withdraw from the process," the statement read.

"These tenders were subsequently awarded in part to family and a friend of the employee, resulting in the employee either directly or indirectly receiving benefit from the contracts."

The City declined to provide further details as the matter is currently before court.
