Cape Town - Firefighters have contained an extensive vegetation fire on the mountain slopes above Capri Village in Cape Town on Tuesday, the city's fire and rescue services said.

"Crews will spend some considerable time with mopping-up operations," said spokesperson Liezl Moodie.

She said they were also attending to a second fire near a sports field in Nelson Road, Fish Hoek.

The fire above Capri Village, and near the Glencairn Expressway, started on Tuesday morning.

At least 40 firefighters and 10 fire vehicles were used to contain the blaze. A helicopter water bombed inaccessible areas.

The village is between Noordhoek, Kommetjie and Fish Hoek.

Last week a fire engulfed the southern Cape peninsula, destroying a number of homes and holiday cottages in Simon's Town.
