Cape Town - A man shot dead an armed intruder who attacked his wife and daughter in Lansdowne, Western Cape police confirmed on Friday.

Two armed men targeted the women outside their home in Rockford Road on Wednesday night, said spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut.

One of the men forced the mother inside the residence, where he was confronted by her husband.

"After being shot at, the owner of the house fired a shot at the suspect and fatally wounded him," said Traut.

His alleged accomplice entered the home and was shot and wounded.

Traut said it is believed two other suspects waiting outside the house then fled the scene.

The wounded man was arrested and placed under police guard in hospital.

An inquest docket was being investigated.
