Cape Town - A newborn baby boy has survived after his mother allegedly stabbed him in the neck in Cape Town at the weekend, Western Cape police said on Monday.

The boy was a few hours old at the time, Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said.

On Sunday, officers followed up on an assault complaint at the day hospital in Macassar.

A nursing sister told police that the woman, who was at the hospital, had given birth at home. The 33-year-old woman had apparently used a knife to stab the baby before wrapping him up in a blanket and bringing him to the hospital.

Although the baby went into shock, the knife did not hit any major structures in the neck.

The infant was admitted to the Macassar Community Health Centre maternity unit and later transferred to Tygerberg Hospital.

The hospital's spokesperson, Laticia Pienaar, said the baby was in a stable condition on Monday. She said his hospital stay may be prolonged due to the ongoing police investigation.

The provincial social development department did not immediately respond to enquiries on the baby's future.

The mother would appear on attempted murder charges at the Somerset West Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
