Johannesburg - The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra is mourning the death of Kammersänger and honorary member Johan Botha.

Tenor Botha died in Vienna on Thursday morning.

"We will also remember his courage, his warmth, his generosity and above all his glorious voice," the orchestra's board said in a statement.

The Cape Town orchestra said they were proud to have worked with the South African during his last concert on August 13 at the Artscape Opera, with Berhard Guller and singers Goitsemang Lehoybe, Bongiwe Nakani and Mandla Ndebele.

Botha performed at some of the world’s major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Vienna State Opera.

He regularly performed at the Metropolitan Opera and Wiener Staatsoper, where he made his debut in 1996, and he performed in operas like Strauss’s Daphne, Frau ohne Schatten and Beethoven’s Fidelio.

In the summer of 2010, Botha made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival in the role of Siegmund.

Apart from his opera appearances, he regularly sang in concerts all over the world and collaborated with prestigious conductors, like Barenboim, Boulez, Bychkov, Dohnanyi, Gatti, Gergiev, Janssons, Levine, Maazel, Pappano, Petrenko, Welser-Möst, Thielemann, and Young.

His recordings included CD's of Aïda, Elektra, the Verdi Requiem, Die Meistersinger, Lohengrin and Die Walküre.

In June 2012, he was appointed ambassador of the Blue Shield Foundation and last month was appointed honorary patron of Cape Town Opera.
