Cape Town - A Kraaifontein woman is in trouble with the law after almost crashing her car into that of a traffic official, and then allegedly assaulting a traffic cop.

JP Smith, the City of Cape Town's mayoral committee member for safety and security, said in a statement that the incident happened while members of the so-called ghost squad were conducting an operation to rid the northern suburbs of illegal drag racing, Netwerk24 reported.

Smith said the woman almost hit a traffic official as she tried to speed away.

She allegedly refused to stop and skipped several red traffic lights and stop streets in her attempt to escape.

When the officials eventually managed to stop her, they found she was drunk, Smith said.

At the Kraaifontein police station, the woman asked to use the toilet. She then kicked and hit a female traffic official.

"The woman was also charged with assault," said Smith.

"Her behaviour was shocking, but not uncommon. Our officials are often targeted by people who do not respect anyone or anything. We are not going to change people's behaviour if they are not sent to prison for a long time or we name and shame them," he said.
