Pretoria – The car wash employee who ran over a pregnant woman two weeks ago has been fired.

Eduan Ras, the manager of the Sasol filling station in Gezina where the incident took place, told Netwerk24 the man was fired on Tuesday morning after a disciplinary hearing on Monday.

Belinda Louw, 35, was 38 weeks pregnant when she was run over. The baby, who was going to be called Ryan, did not survive and Louw died in the Muelmed hospital in Pretoria on Sunday.

Marina Minnaar, a consultant at Media Labour who handled the case, said the man was charged with gross negligence after running Louw over in another client's Toyota Fortuner that he was not authorised to drive.

Louw was in the waiting area while her own car was being washed.

"Due to the serious nature of the case I decided that he should be fired," Minnaar said.

She said the man was in shock and showed sincere remorse.

He had a clean disciplinary record before the incident.

The police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
