Johannesburg – The case against a correctional services official and a gangster, who allegedly tried to help convicted Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir escape from prison, was postponed to April 11 in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Monday.

NPA spokesperson Phindi Louw said the two men - correctional services official Solly Metlae and gangster Sandile Mdumbe - were charged with corruption, conspiracy to commit an offence and defeating the ends of justice.

"Metlae was, at the time, guarding Krejcir when he tried to aid his escape," Louw said.

Several of Krejcir's plots and plans to escape from prison have been thwarted by the Department of Correctional Services.

In September last year, departmental spokesperson Manelisi Wolela said they had averted apparent escape plans by inmates, that included Krejcir, at Zonderwater Correctional Centre, after it raided a number of cells.

The Sunday Independent reported that amongst the items found in Krejcir's cell were a pistol, ammunition, a knife, an item that looked like a taser, a pepper spray gun, screwdriver steel blades, 10 cellphones, a memory stick and a diary which contained the names of witnesses and investigators in his cases.

In November, Krejcir's mother allegedly deposited R600 000 into the account of a woman to help fund his bid to escape from prison, News24 reported.

Various reports indicated the 37-year-old woman, whose account it was, had been arrested after she allegedly made several cash withdrawals from different bank branches.

In October, a 45-year-old woman was granted R3 000 bail after appearing in the Cullinan Magistrate's Court, after she was accused of trying to smuggle a cellphone to Krejcir at the Zonderwater Prison, News24 reported.

Krejcir was then moved to the C-Max in Kokstad, KwaZulu-Natal.
