Cape Town - A cash van driver is expected to appear in the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court on Thursday after he drove off with money from a local mall on Monday, the Western Cape Hawks have confirmed.

The 35-year-old suspect was arrested on Tuesday afternoon, spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha said.

"It is alleged that the driver fled with the money when the crew stepped out of the van," he explained.

"When the crew returned, the vehicle and the driver were nowhere to be found."

The abandoned van was later found by police at the Khayelitsha cemetery.

"The doors and vault were apparently grinded open, with the money missing. It has transpired that approximately six suspects held the cemetery guards at gunpoint, while the others were allegedly grinding the vault before they offloaded the money."

The driver faces a charge of cash-in-transit robbery, police said.
