Cape Town – The government on Sunday congratulated Caster Semenya for breezing through the women’s 800m final and securing an Olympic gold medal.

"Caster was a popular choice from the beginning and we were in full support of our South African sensation, said Minister in the Presidency responsible for women Susan Shabangu.

She said her commendable win was a result of hard work and dedication.

Caster has made South Africa very proud and we wish her well in her future endeavours."

Semenya finished in a time of 1:55.28 - a personal best and a new South African record.

Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi received a silver medal and Margaret Wambui of Kenya a bronze.

Semenya was at the centre of a debate surrounding testosterone levels in female athletes and a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decision taken in July 2015 that put a stop to testosterone regulation in female athletes.

Shabangu said government was proud of all South African athletes for giving their best.

"South African citizens also excelled in their support of our South African heroes. Let us welcome all participants with the same enthusiasm and vigour when they return home."
