Pietermaritzburg - Chaos reigned at Umgungundlovu TVET College when smoke engulfed the institution’s Msunduzi Campus building in Pietermaritz Street on Monday.

Students ran for their lives when a fire broke out in the computer centre, with students inside the lecture rooms.

Four students were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and are said to be in a critical but stable condition.

Fire fighters extinguished the blaze, which could be seen from a distance.

Lectures were subsequently cancelled for the remainder of the day, with students told to return today.

Police were yet to establish the cause of the fire by the time of going to print yesterday.

Spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese said no case had been opened.

“Lectures were ongoing when the fire broke, with students close to the electricity hub,” he said.

The college said it would comment today.
