Johannesburg – A man and four women appeared in the Springs Magistrate's Court on Monday, facing charges under sexual offences and human trafficking laws.

Seventeen people, including a local actor, were initially arrested for the matter. However, only five were charged.

According to a source close to the case, there was no evidence against the other 12 people.

The four women appeared side by side with the man before a packed court gallery.

They face charges of human trafficking and living out of the proceeds of prostitution.

One of the women wept as the court postponed the matter to June 6.

Last Thursday, 11 women in their early twenties and six men between 19 and 42 were found at the house in the old mining town after a woman ran away and tipped police off about an alleged brothel.

The woman who tipped them off was taken to a place of safety.
