Polokwane – Four people, including a 4-year-old child, have been killed and 12 others injured after a taxi and light motor vehicle collided on the N1 northbound, roughly 35km outside of Polokwane in Limpopo, paramedics said.

ER24 paramedics, along with various other services, arrived on the scene shortly after 18:00 on Saturday evening, ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

Paramedics found a light motor vehicle in the middle of the road while a taxi lay some distance away on the side of the road.

Meiring said several bodies were found strewn across the scene while several were found walking along the roadside.

Two men, a woman and a young girl, believed to be 4-years-old, had sustained fatal injuries. They were declared dead on the scene.

Four patients were in a critical condition while eight others had sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious.

Paramedics assessed and provided the critically injured with advanced life support. The patients were transported to various hospitals in the area for urgent treatment.

The road was closed for some time due to the collision. Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
