Johannesburg – A child died and another four children were hospitalised after they apparently ate poisoned sandwiches at the OR Tambo squatter camp in Randfontein, Gauteng police said.

Captain Kay Makhubela said the children were aged between 4 and 10 years old. The incident happened on Sunday afternoon.

"It is alleged that the children were given poisoned sandwiches. After some time they started vomiting and the other one vomited to death – the four were taken to hospital."

Sunday's incident follows last week's hospitalisation of 25 children at a primary school in The Hills, south of Johannesburg, after they were apparently given poisoned sweets by an unknown man.

The children were later discharged from hospital.
