2016-04-07 18:05

Durban – A child was killed and houses destroyed during Wednesday night’s heavy storms in KwaZulu-Natal, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube said on Thursday.

Dube-Ncube said disaster management teams had been dispatched to affected areas in Ulundi, Pongolo, and theAbaqulusi municipality.

The MEC said the department was working closely with other departments to assess the damage to private property and public infrastructure, as well as in dispatching help to affected families and communities.

"We urge communities in Ulundi, Pongolo and Abaqulusi to report disasters directly to the department and liaise with our teams on the ground,” said Dube-Ncube, adding that the department would respond speedily.

The MEC said the department was also attending to storm damage in areas that had been affected by the ongoing drought.

"This is putting significant pressure on the department’s resources, but it is also forcing its disaster management teams to diversify its activities and multi-task," said Dube-Ncube.
